frequently asked questions
what is the lifespan of a hedgehog?
On average, Hedgehogs live 3-9 years.
Do male and female hedgehogs have different personalities?
There is no difference in personality or temperament between males and females. Each hedgehog is an individual just like a human, not one is like another. Unlike some other species of animals where one sex may be more calm or grumpy, that isn’t the case with hedgehogs.
can hedgehogs live together?
there are two answers to this question.
Hedgehogs are actually quite solitary in nature and rarely seek out other hedgehogs for company. 2 female hedgehogs can be housed together, it is recommended that if you want to keep two females together, you purchase them both at a young age and same time so that they can bond.
It is NOT recommended to house multiple mature males together. They tend to be territorial and there is a high possibility that two males will fight if housed together.
Of course males and females should NEVER be housed together except for breeding purposes.
Male and Female hedgehogs can reproduce as early as 8 weeks old but this is HIGHLY dangerous to the females, as they mature around 6 months of age. Do not let opposite sex hedgehogs "play" as Hedgehogs can breed VERY quickly and you will likely not even notice.
We do not condone breeding unless you have a mentor or are a USDA breeder.

why should i buy a hedgehog from The 90s hedgies?
We at THE 90s HEDGIES strive to produce happy, healthy, well socialized hedgehogs so that our customers can have a wonderful pet to add to their family. We only breed pedigreed hedgehogs with at least a 5-generation lineage to make sure that we’re breeding from the healthiest lines possible. We strive for under 1% COI to ensure that there is a vast amount of genetic variation in our hoglets.
We’re always interested in making sure we are up-to-date, knowledgeable and educated on everything hedgehog related. We are always researching to try and broaden our knowledge on hedgehogs. This allows us to be better breeders, animal owners and more able to help our customers. Furthermore, we believe that our customers deserve great, reliable communication with their breeder, so we’re always available to answer questions and help with solutions.
On top of all of that, we are up to date with all reported WHS cases within the hedgehog breeding world. We keep a database with over 5,000 individual hedgehogs and update pedigrees on a daily basis. When a case is reported (with a necropsy report), we will update the diseased hedgehog's pedigree and add notes to their past 3 generations that way we can keep track of what hogs should not be paired together.

What is whs?
Wobbly hedgehog syndrome (WHS) is a progressive degenerative neurological disease of African and European hedgehogs sometimes referred to as progressive paresis/paralysis. It has been noted with increasing frequency since the mid 1990's. It slowly degrades the animal's muscle control perhaps similar to that of MS in humans. The exact cause of WHS is still unknown but is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental.
